Students from countries like the Netherlands have set their sights on the broader picture and have become ‘savvier’ in their university choices and now it seems students from the UK are following suit.

With fees set to rise to £9,000, many students are looking for value for money and the chance to study a broader course.  Whilst the numbers are still small, many privately educated youngsters are looking ahead to their higher education and choosing a university abroad.

Irish and American universities are amongst the most popular choices this year with promise of better value for money and more opportunity.  Helen Wright, headmistress of a private school in Wiltshire commented:

"Students are now very aware - with the squeeze in UK places and rise in tuition fees - that they might need to hedge their bets, so we are finding that a student who might previously have stuck to UCAS is now doing that, plus applying for an art foundation course, plus applying abroad so that they have a number of options.

"With the European universities, it is not just that they are now marketing themselves very effectively and their fees are much lower but also because our girls are developing a more global outlook and realising that international experience is highly regarded and will give them a career advantage.”

Whilst students look to move abroad to study, the UK universities look to meet the market and provide students with more scope when it comes to course choices but will the rising tuition fees continue to push them away?
