Associate Professor Christoph Langhammer at Chalmers University of Technology has been chosen to the exclusive group of Wallenberg Academy Fellows. It is a career program where the most promising young researchers in all disciplines receive resources to long-term development of its business. The program was created in 2012 by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, in close cooperation with the five royal academies and 16 Swedish universities.

Christoph Langhammer will, besides the honorable appointment, also receive 1.5 million per year for five years. The money will be used to explore nanoplasmonic to produce new catalysts and sensors. Key objective of the project is to develop a highly sensitive sensor for hydrogen gas, which is needed in the future of the automotive industry, and a catalyst that can convert carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide for reuse of the carbon content.

Nanoplasmonic has in recent years developed into one of the more dynamic areas in nanotechnology. Researchers employing that light may induce collective oscillations of electrons in the metal nanoparticles, a phenomenon called plasmon resonance. Plasmon resonance interacts with the light, which has been used in such optical sensors and solar cells.

"Until now, scientists have basically only used silver and gold in the development of plasmon resonance technology" says Christoph Langhammer. "We will now develop more materials for the technology, alloys of various elements and nano-fabricated materials that is built atomic layer by atomic layer."

"The fact that our founder and the closest academic partner continues to show that he is one of the top young scientists in Sweden, affects Insplorion in different ways. Especially when, as in this case is about sensor development for hydrogen that we have our eyes on and where there can be synergies with the air quality project that we run together, "says Patrik Dahlqvist, CEO of Insplorion.
