NEW YORK—August 21, 2012—On September 12, Intelligence Squared U.S. (IQ2US) will kick off its Fall 2012 season at new venue Kaufman Center, with a debate about campaign financing, “Two Cheers for Super PACs: Money in Politics is Still Overregulated.”  The product of two court decisions—Citizens United and SpeechNow.org v. Federal Election Committee—that allow for unlimited spending by independent political groups, Super PAC spending is on course to making 2012 the most expensive presidential election in history.  But how have Super PACs changed the political landscape?  And are they good for democracy?

David Keating, President of the Center for Competitive Politics and Jacob Sullum, senior editor of Reason, will argue in support of the motion. Jonathan Soros, Senior Fellow at the Roosevelt Institute and co-founder of  Friends of Democracy with Trevor Potter, who represents Stephen Colbert’s Super PAC and was formerly General Counsel to the John McCain 2008 and 2000 Presidential campaigns, will argue against the motion.

Intelligence Squared U.S.'s fall season debates are streamed live on Fora.tv. Debates also air on more than 220 NPR stations nationwide and are televised nationally on the WORLD channel and in the New York area on PBS Channel Thirteen, WNET, WLIW, and NJTV.
