Intercollegiate Studies Institute Elects Five New Trustees
The Intercollegiate Studies Institute announced today that its Board of Trustees has welcomed five new members: Michael W. Gleba, Ambassador Patricia L. Herbold, James Piereson, Dr. Ion Ratiu, and Marc A. Thiessen.
“ISI is grateful to welcome such an accomplished and varied group of leaders to its board,” said ISI President Christopher Long. “They have demonstrated their principled leadership in business, government, journalism, and many other areas of American life. Their insight will be invaluable as ISI advances its mission of ‘educating for liberty.’”
Michael W. Gleba is President and Trustee of the Sarah Scaife Foundation and Treasurer and Trustee of the Carthage Foundation in Pittsburgh. He serves on the boards of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University; the Commonwealth Foundation for Public Policy Alternatives; the Allegheny Institute for Public Policy; the Competitive Enterprise Institute; the National Center for Policy Analysis; Saint Vincent College’s Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics, and Government; and the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, among other institutions.
Patricia L. Herbold served as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Singapore from 2005 until 2009. She began her career as an analytical chemist before earning a JD from Northern Kentucky University’s Salmon P. Chase College of Law. She served as Associate Regional Counsel with Prudential Insurance of America and General Counsel of Bank One in Dayton. Herbold also served as Mayor of Montgomery, Ohio. Together with her husband, Robert J. Herbold, former Chief Operating Officer of Microsoft, she established the Herbold Foundation, which awards scholarships to King County, Washington, high school seniors.
James Piereson is President of the William E. Simon Foundation and a Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute, where he directs the Center for the American University. From 1985 through 2005 he was Executive Director of the John M. Olin Foundation. Piereson serves on the boards of the Philanthropy Roundtable, the Thomas W. Smith Foundation, Donors Trust, the Pinkerton Foundation, the Center for Individual Rights, the American Spectator Foundation, the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, and the Foundation for Cultural Renewal.
Ion Ratiu is CEO of the Austin Thyroid and Endocrinology Center in Austin, Texas. He earned his PhD in electrical engineering and computer sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Technical University in Hanover, Germany, he spent twenty years at IBM in advanced technical development and technical and business strategy, managing more than $1 billion in revenue. Dr. Ratiu is a trustee of the Witherspoon Institute.
Marc A. Thiessen is a columnist for the Washington Post, a New York Times bestselling author, and a Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. The Daily Telegraph named him one of the “100 most influential conservatives in America.” Thiessen had a fifteen-year national security career that took him from Capitol Hill to the Pentagon to the White House, where was chief speechwriter to President George W. Bush. He is a graduate of Vassar College, where he began his writing career with ISI’s Collegiate Network of independent student publications.
