The Honorable Pierre S. du Pont IV, former governor of Delaware, has joined the Intercollegiate Studies Institute’s Board of Trustees.

ISI President Christopher Long says: “Pete’s creativity and political vision have been an inspiration to me and so many of ISI’s members, and we are thrilled that he agreed to serve ISI in this new leadership role. From his early association with ISI’s first president, William F. Buckley Jr., to his welcoming of ISI to its new Delaware headquarters in the 1990s, to his more recent involvements, Pete has supported ISI’s mission for decades. His counsel will be invaluable as a trustee.”

Mr. du Pont joins a group of twenty-two other leaders from the fields of business, politics, journalism, and education, including five new trustees announced in June: Michael W. Gleba, Ambassador Patricia L. Herbold, James Piereson, Dr. Ion Ratiu, and Marc A. Thiessen.

Pete du Pont has served as a state legislator, U.S. congressman, governor, and, in 1988, Republican candidate for president of the United States. During his two terms as governor of Delaware, he restored financial integrity to the state government, signing into law two income-tax reduction measures and a constitutional amendment that restrained future tax increases and government spending. He balanced the state budget eight out of eight years. In selecting him as one of the “Delawareans of the Century,” the Wilmington News Journal said that du Pont “set the stage for prosperity” and “revived [the] business climate.”

Mr. du Pont writes the “Outside the Box” column for the Wall Street Journal. He also serves on the boards of the National Center for Policy Analysis and the Longwood Foundation, and he is the former chairman of the Hudson Institute and the National Review Institute.

Before beginning his career in politics, Mr. du Pont served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and held several positions in the DuPont Company. He holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Princeton University and a law degree from Harvard University.
