LOCAL HERO JOINS CENTRAL SPORTS TEAM
ST HELENS Rugby League legend Phil Veivers has joined Central Sports to inspire the next generation of young sports and leisure industry professionals.
The former St Helens full back is now helping young people learn everything they need to know for successful and rewarding careers. Central Sports, based in St Helens, is one of the UK's largest providers of work based learning for the sport, exercise and active leisure sector, supported by the Learning and Skills Council. Phil, who is teaching Apprenticeships in ‘Activity Leadership’ and ‘Operational Services’ as part of young apprenticeships and employability training programmes, said: “I am very pleased to be working with Central Sports and helping young people in St Helens and the surrounding areas benefit from a positive start to their sports related careers. “As well as teaching them new skills, I can share my own experiences with them, both as a professional rugby player, and also as a coach and motivator. I hope to inspire them to perform their best in everything they do!” Phil first arrived in the UK from his native Australia in 1984 playing full back for St Helens. He played 381 games during 12 successful years. During his career, he also played for the Australian team the Southern Suburbs, and Huddersfield before moving into coaching at the Bradford Bulls and Wigan Warriors. David Floyd, Operations Director of Central Sports, said: “Central Sports is committed to bringing together young people eager for challenging and rewarding careers with tutors who have a wide ranging experience of sports and coaching in the leisure industry. “Phil is an excellent role model to all young people – his experiences as a professional sports person, and the opportunities that he has developed to enhance his career are a great inspiration.“ Central Sports’ work based learning supports companies and individuals by providing training within a working environment, helping individuals acquire occupational skills and industry recognised qualifications.
