On the 19th of June, the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) will welcome the arrival of its new director, Alfredo Zamudio.  With a long history of humanitarian experience, a strong human rights background and as an outspoken and charismatic advocate, Zamudio is in a strong position to take IDMC, the global leader on internal displacement issues, into the future.

GENEVA, 14 JUNE 2013:

“Over the last 15 years, IDMC's analysis of internal displacement has grown in influence and expertise,” says Rolf A. Vestvik, Director of Advocacy and Information, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).  “Today it is widely respected as the as the go-to organisation on internal displacement issues, and with Alfredo at the helm we are confident that IDMC will continue to grow and innovate under his leadership.”

Alfredo Zamudio arrived in Norway as a refugee from Chile in 1976. He has held prominent positions in public administration, including as the Executive Director for the Human Rights House Foundation. He has a strong professional background and extensive field experience. He was the Country Director for NRC in East Timor (2007-2011) and NRC’s camp manager in Darfur (2005-2006).

“IDPs are struggling to remain visible on the global agenda, despite making up almost twice the population of refugees worldwide,” says Zamudio.Having worked extensively with displaced populations, I understand the need to preserve the dignity and respect for IDPs, whilst fighting for change on their behalf. I very much look forward to working more with actors in this field.

Zamudio has served in different managerial functions related to protection, human rights, and humanitarian operations, and has international experience from his work with the ProCap and the Red Cross in Colombia. He holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

“IDMC has an impressive reputation as an increasingly innovative and forward thinking organisation,” says Zamudio.  “I am excited about my new post, and what the future will hold.”
