London, UK, 3 April 2012 – As eCommerce reaches its 18th birthday in 2012 Internet Retailing, the must-read trade title specialising in eCommerce and Multichannel Retail, is celebrating by holding the first ever eCommerce Birthday Party Awards. The event, to be attended by 350 leading industry figures and award winners, will commemorate stellar achievements over the past 18 years.

Growth has indeed been dramatic since the first recorded transaction happened in 1994. Some six trillion Euros now changes hands annually through e-Commerce, as the European Commission’s Vice President for Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, commented recently in Brussels.

The inaugural Birthday Party Awards (BPA) will take place on Wednesday July 18 at London’s Cannon Street Roof Gardens, which offers panoramic views over the city’s prized riverscape.

“Many creative, wealth-generating industries like film and fashion benefit from established, signature events, such as the Oscars and its Vanity Fair party. This 18th birthday year is the right time for eCommerce to begin a comparable tradition,” said Ian Jindal, Editor-in-Chief of Internet Retailing. “The Birthday Party Awards will become an annual event, celebrating the industry’s best achievements and its leading innovators.”

Jindal also explained that the BPA will echo the spirit of the Internet by ensuring the awards are as inclusive, far-reaching and meritorious as possible, drawing in industry bodies, media and experts. “The evening will belong to the outstanding high achievers and new upstarts that make eCommerce one of today’s most exciting and dynamic sectors,” he added.

A total of six awards will be presented, including the Coming of Age Award for successful long-term performance, the Newborn Award for the best recent launch or transformation, the Turnaround Award for improvement through online innovation, and the Innovation & Inspiration Award for the most envied or emulated business. The two remaining awards will be revealed following further consultation with the BPA Advisory Board, which comprises retailers, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, sponsors and expert partners. The board will also finalise the BPA guest list. Further details of its membership will be released in May 2012.
