Asda Customers Check Out New Design Features At ISG Cheltenham Project
ISG has completed a £10 million project to construct a new store for Asda in Cheltenham, which incorporates experimental design features never before used on an Asda new build.
Providing a 40,000 ft2 sales floor within a 75,000 ft2 store, the Cheltenham scheme includes Asda’s full retail offering, including in-store bakery, pizza, fish and meat counters, and George clothing. The scheme also included the construction of a new petrol station on the complex along with extensive car parking facilities.
Constructed on a brownfield site, the 27-week project required remediation of the former light industrial plot and ISG also carried out significant remodelling of route ways to the site to provide access and ensure local highways can safely support the increased volume of traffic to the new store.
The conventional steel-frame supermarket breaks with traditional new build Asda schemes and incorporates a green sedum roof and timber cladding to the external elevations. A SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) car park has also been incorporated into the scheme to ensure that its impact on the local environment and infrastructure is minimised.
Rob Martin, ISG’s operations director of UK Retail, commented: “As a business, ISG has forged a strong working relationship with Asda across both refurbishment and new build projects, and this latest scheme is one of more than 20 new build stores that we’ve delivered to date. Our understanding of Asda’s commercial and environmental priorities means that we were ideally-placed to carry out this project and directly apply our expertise within sustainable construction solutions.”
