Completion Of Army Accommodation Scheme Ranks Among ISG's Major Achievements

ISG has completed the final Junior Ranks Single Living Accommodation (JRSLA) building in a £40 million rolling programme of 86 assets carried out within just 3½ years. These modular construction assets were carried out as part of the MoD’s strategically important 35-year PFI infrastructure contract, Project Allenby/Connaught, being delivered by Aspire Defence and all were completed within the high security wire.

The final JRSLA at New Normandy barracks in Aldershot follows similar projects at a number of army barracks including Warminster, Larkhill, Bulford and Tidworth. The ISG contract involved the fit-out and installation of mechanical and electrical services and completion of the three-storey modular buildings, comprising 36 bedroom en-suite units, with each of the 86 assets successfully completed within just 14-weeks. The 3½ year programme saw ISG working on multiple JRSLA sites at any one time, on occasion managing up to 20 assets simultaneously.

The JRSLAs were built for the project using the modular design and construction technique and were manufactured on a bespoke production line by Tata Steel’s former Living Solutions division. These were delivered to site as pre-fabricated 4m x 4m pods, with furniture, carpets and pipe work already in place. Aspire Defence completed the ground works and assembled the 51 units in each asset, which included 36 en-suite bedrooms, two common rooms and two kitchens per floor. ISG then completed the mechanical and electrical installation, installed the modular plant room, completed the finishes to the common areas and connected up each finished building to the utility supplies.

ISG’s John Rawlinson, managing director – South West, commented: “Completing so many projects in such a short time frame is a major achievement and we were able to do this by providing the tight project management and flexibility needed to adapt to the complexities of the programme on a daily basis.

“The success of the Aspire Defence JRSLA development programme demonstrates how effective modular construction can be in delivering accommodation quickly and efficiently. ISG is a member of Buildoffsite, the influential organisation established to promote greater uptake of off-site construction solutions, and this latest project highlights our credentials within the modern methods of construction arena.”
