Healthy Success For ISG At The University Of Bradford
ISG has successfully concluded a striking £5.5 million development for the University of Bradford, enabling the School of Health Studies to relocate to the University’s main city campus. The project, which included both new build and refurbishment elements, represents the latest phase of investment by the University of Bradford into teaching and research facilities, and some 2,000 staff and students will now be based in the new building.
Officially opened by Paralympic athlete Baronness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE, the new School of Health Studies occupies a prominent location at the gateway of the City Campus and has transformed the existing Horton building into a modern, multi-purpose state-of-the-art facility. The highlight of the new build extension is a striking cantilevered triple-glazed elevation with glass reinforced concrete cladding to its façade.
Designed by architects Farrell and Clark, the new building supports the University’s ‘Ecoversity’ sustainable development programme and incorporates a green sedum roof and solar shading panels. The use of high performance building materials throughout and a state-of-the-art building management system and highly efficient mechanical and electrical services all contribute towards the impressive green credentials of the structure.
The building is to be used as a high-tech training environment for healthcare professionals and contains simulated treatment rooms that provide students with the opportunity to learn within a realistic hospital environment. Two fully furnished clinical wards provide as close to real life scenarios as possible for students. Additional facilities include two physiotherapy rooms and movement laboratories, practical rooms, equipment and models for student midwives. Occupational therapy students have two suites, one of which is a ‘home from home’ room kitted out with a kitchen and bathroom where they can learn to assist vulnerable people with independent living. Radiographers have access to a fully-functioning x-ray suite and a further digital Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS) suite to teach analysis of x-rays and scans.
Dean of The School of Health Studies, Shirley Congdon, said: “These facilities will strengthen the ability of our academics to provide students with learning opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills to make a positive impact on patient care. This means Bradford graduates will have a significant advantage in securing employment in the health and social care sector. The development of a physiotherapy clinic offering treatment to students, staff and members of the public is an example of how the new facilities provide opportunities for students to enhance their clinical skills whilst creating a service for the local community.”
