ISG Back To School With £4.3 Million Streatham School Scheme

ISG is to carry out a complex £4.3 million extension project at Hitherfield Primary School in Streatham, to enable the school to expand its intake in response to a growing local population.

Awarded by the London Borough of Lambeth, the project involves construction of two new three-storey teaching blocks positioned at either end of the existing 100-year-old junior block. The school’s existing kitchen and one of the toilet blocks occupy part of the footprint for the new extension, so the scheme involves extensive enabling works to ensure that the school can remain fully operational throughout the works.

The important enabling phase sees ISG install modular structures to house temporary kitchens and toilets on the existing playground, which lies within the contractor’s compound. This phase also includes provision of a temporary playground on the school field to ensure pupils have sufficient outdoor facilities during the construction project.

ISG will deliver the project in a total of five phases to minimise disruption to staff and pupils at the school, leading up to full project handover in January 2013. Construction work will enable the school to admit an additional class in both September 2012 and 2013. The two new build extensions to the junior block will be of concrete frame construction with brick cladding to complement the existing building, and provide accommodation for 18 new classrooms. The design is based around the classroom cluster concept, which groups the three classes of each year together around central shared amenities.

Within the infant block, ISG will carry out structural alterations to maximise the usable floor space in the existing building, which will include removal of load-bearing partitions and provision of new structural supports. Space will be rationalised and reconfigured to provide accommodation for much needed specialist teaching areas. The project also includes the construction of additional play areas on podium decks and involves wide-ranging external landscaping both as part of the enabling phase and following structural completion.

ISG’s Bernard Clarke, managing director - South East, commented: “We have considerable experience of working on live school sites and from the outset have been in close contact with Hitherfield Primary’s management team to schedule the programme in line with the academic calendar and the school’s own specific requirements. This project will enable the school to move from a two form to a three form intake, maximising the potential of the school’s grounds while enhancing facilities for current and future generations in Streatham.”
