ISG Builds Northern Engineering Services Powerhouse

International construction services company ISG is investing in further strengthening its Engineering Services capabilities in the North of England, with the recruitment of several senior posts and the formation of a major projects team capable of delivering schemes in excess of £200 million in value.

The move follows the appointment of divisional director Nathan McNamara last year, with a remit to drive ISG’s growth in construction and fit out across technical and highly engineered sectors in the North of England, including research and development (R&D), higher education, healthcare and manufacturing industries.

The company is currently on site in Yorkshire and the North East delivering a number of data center projects with a combined value in excess of £60 million. ISG’s project portfolio also includes the Sheffield Institute of Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), with both schemes successfully completed for the University of Sheffield.

ISG is currently recruiting a divisional operations manager and divisional commercial manager to support further growth of its northern Engineering Services business, which is based out of the company’s Leeds and Manchester offices. ISG also plans to add a business development manager to the division’s management team.

Nathan McNamara commented: “Universities, research, technology and the digital economy are all integral elements of the Northern Powerhouse vision, and creating world-class facilities that both retain regional talent, and attract the brightest minds from across the UK and beyond, are pivotal to delivering on these ambitious aspirations.

“ISG’s strategy is to create our own northern powerhouse of construction expertise for technical environments, with the capability to tackle any scheme, from small laboratory refurbishments to major science parks, hospitals and data center projects.”

This strategy is founded on significant investment in the region. Yorkshire is already recognised as a key financial centre, with more than 30 national and international banks based in the region and anticipated growth of up to 21 per cent by 2022, driving the need for increased data center capacity.

Meanwhile, Sheffield was announced as a test bed for medical sector ‘innovation centres’ earlier this year and £743 million has been earmarked to support Yorkshire’s booming science sector, while Manchester already has an established reputation as a centre for knowledge-based businesses.

Nathan added: “The Northern Powerhouse region has a total of 23 universities, six of which rank within the top 20 research institutions in the UK. Investment in new facilities to support those and other northern academic institutions, plus projects connected to the sectors they feed make the North an exciting area of growth for our Engineering Services specialism.”
