Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has appointed ISG to build a replacement fire station, which has been five years in the planning. The project is ISG’s latest framework win – secured via the influential North East Procurement Organisation (NEPO) Construction Framework.

Work has commenced on the construction of Marley Park Community Fire Station, which will replace an outdated fire station in Fulwell, Sunderland – with the project due for completion in summer 2015. The new Fire Station will be located on the corner of Old Mill Road and Marley Crescent in the Marley Pots area of the city.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service revealed its intention to relocate its community fire station in Fulwell five years ago. This was followed by extensive consultation with the local community on its plans. The building at Fulwell is out of date and not in the best location to manage the risk within the community. Over the last two years the Service has held a number of information sessions for residents.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Joy Brindle, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The replacement of Fulwell Fire Station has been a key part of our plans for a number of years. Whilst Fulwell station has served us well over the years, due to its age, condition, location and restrictions on the site it does not provide the best environment for today's modern fire service.”

Tyne and Wear Fire Authority Chairman, Councillor Tom Wright, said: “This new, modern station is great news for the local community and for Sunderland. It will be in the heart of the community and provide good facilities for our firefighters to train and work in, and for the local community to use."

Managing Director of ISG’s Construction Business, Alan McCarthy-Wyper, said: “The Marley Park Community Fire Station adds to our growing portfolio of blue light projects in the North East, including a high profile scheme at Bowburn for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service and our £22 million capital works framework with Cleveland Fire Authority.

“We are seeing encouraging signs of growth in this key regional market, with the NEPO framework an important factor in bringing projects to site quickly and cost effectively, and I’m delighted that ISG is working with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service to realise its vision for this important new community facility.”
