ISG Extends Bradford Primary School

ISG has been awarded a £1.8 million project by Bradford Metropolitan Council to extend and refurbish Thornton Primary School. The scheme sees the contractor enhance capacity at the school by 90 pupil places, as well as creating a new entrance and improved administrative facilities.

The project involves the construction of two new extensions, the first of which will create six new classrooms within a linked single-storey steel frame structure. Designed to complement later extensions to the existing building, the new structure will incorporate high level glazing within a central ridge feature, maximising the volume of natural daylight entering the access corridor below. The extension will include a green sedum planted roof and the classrooms will benefit from an efficient under floor heating system.

The second extension will provide a new entrance to Thornton Primary School, improving accessibility and creating extra space for new offices and a meeting room. This single-storey structure mirrors the design of the new classroom extension and will connect directly into the main school building. ISG will carry out a range of reconfiguration and refurbishment works as part of this element of the project, upgrading the school’s commercial kitchen and redecorating the existing dining facilities.

The project will be carried out within a live school environment and the programme has been carefully developed to minimise disruption to staff and pupils, with out of hours working and major structural elements and demolition work carried out during holiday periods. The new facilities will be operational for the start of the new academic year in September, with ISG maintaining a site presence after this date, carrying out a range of external works.

ISG’s John Gittins, managing director – North East, commented: “Across the UK, ISG continues to secure a growing volume of projects that address the increasing demand for primary school places. Our latest project for Bradford Metropolitan Council draws upon our extensive experience managing complex programmes within live school environments, delivering cost-effective refurbishment and extension solutions aligned to the Best Value principles of local authorities.”
