ISG has secured a complex fast-track refurbishment project at Willows High School, as part of the Cardiff City Council Framework.

With the project commencing in mid-August, ISG was given just three weeks to complete the enabling works phase, which included construction of a new corridor to link two existing parts of the school and erection of two modular classrooms. With this element completed during the summer holiday period, ISG continues to deliver the remainder of the programme, with a further phased handover due towards the end of October and final completion scheduled for the end of the year.

The project involves the conversion of the school’s existing catering facilities into two new design and technology classrooms, including extensive remodelling and fit out of the space. The existing food science classrooms will be transformed into the school’s new catering and dining facilities, with capacity for more than 700 students. The modular classrooms are being used to provide extra teaching space throughout the project’s duration and are then expected to remain as a permanent addition to the school’s facilities.

ISG’s John Rawlinson, managing director - South West, commented: “The Willows High School redevelopment is a great example of a project ideally suited for delivery via the framework, due to the extremely tight deadlines and challenging live environment working. Robust planning and a flexible approach are essential attributes in the successful delivery of this scheme and we are confident that our initial success will be carried through to the end of the project, where both staff and pupils will greatly benefit from improved facilities.”
