ISG Marks Green Building Week with Gold Leaf Membership

ISG has become a UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) Gold Leaf member as part of the company’s continued commitment to its 2020 Sustainability Vision.

The move coincides with World Green Building Week (21-25 September), a Green Building Council initiative to encourage global debate about the role of the built environment in delivering a more sustainable future.

Philippa Stone, ISG’s group head of sustainability, commented: “Sustainability is one of the greatest challenges and the greatest opportunities facing the construction industry and World Green Building Week is a platform to celebrate how far we have come and consider how we can continue to deliver more sustainable buildings.

“ISG’s UK-GBC Gold Leaf membership confirms our commitment to those goals and is supported by a reinvigorated sustainability strategy, informed by the thorough measurement and reporting structures we have put in place to benchmark our performance and designed to achieve quantifiable outcomes.”

As part of its re-focused strategy, in 2014, ISG voluntarily responded to the CDP climate change programme for the first time, achieving a score of 93B; well above the construction sector average of 53C.

Philippa added: “The score of 93 out of 100 indicates the level of transparency we achieved in our response and the ‘B’ rating measures how effectively we are addressing climate change risk.

“We were delighted with the results but recognise that there is more we can do, which is why the UK-GBC Gold Leaf membership and Group Sustainability Strategy are so significant to the company’s ongoing development.”

This year, along with responding to CDP, the company will also report its independently audited greenhouse gas emissions in its annual report for the second time, ahead of any mandatory Government requirement to do so. ISG has set a target of reducing CO2 emissions by 5 per cent per £million revenue by 2016-17 and by 15 per cent by 2019-20.

“As part of our re-focused strategy, we have introduced global and UK-wide sustainability targets for the business,” Philippa continued, “alongside our continuing commitment to social sustainability through local community investment, charity partnerships and pro bono work.

“Projects like the Aldwych Quarter, where we worked closely with the customer to ensure that the scheme achieved three BREEAM ‘Excellent’ ratings, indicate that we already have a strong reputation in the marketplace as a sustainability-focused construction services company. Our Gold Leaf membership brings us together with many of the built environment sector’s most enlightened organisations, sharing knowledge and best practice to drive the sustainability agenda forward.”
