ISG Revamps Essex College

ISG has been awarded a £4.7 million project to upgrade the main Benfleet Campus building at Essex-based further and higher education establishment, Seevic College.

Catering for more than 3,000 students across three campuses located in Benfleet and Basildon, Seevic College provides a wide range of courses for 16-19-year-olds and adult learners and offers degrees in partnership with two universities. Starting on site in February, ISG’s 35-week modernisation scheme will comprehensively upgrade facilities at the Benfleet Campus to create a modern, spacious learning environment.

The refurbishment project will dramatically alter the external appearance of the college, with ISG erecting a new steel frame to encapsulate the existing building, creating more internal space and supporting a new feature curved roof. The entrance will be remodelled and feature a glazed atrium and open plan social area at ground floor level, with a new conference suite on the first floor. The building’s façade will be enhanced with the addition of areas of composite cladding and the scheme also incorporates minor landscaping works.

A courtyard extension will provide additional space and ISG will reconfigure the internal layout of the existing building to maximise accommodation and create modern, spacious learning environments. The refurbishment also incorporates a full mechanical and electrical infrastructure upgrade, which sees the contractor installing efficient building services and a new management system, as well as solar glazing to minimise heat loss within the building.

ISG’s Ian Gifford, managing director – East, commented: “The vast majority of this complex, phased modernisation project will be carried out while the campus remains open to staff and students, and this presents a range of programme challenges. The key structural work will be undertaken during the Easter holiday period, where much of the steel frame and roof structure will be erected, but for the main part we will be working in close cooperation with Seevic College to ensure we minimise the impact of this major redevelopment.

“On completion, the Benfleet Campus will offer modern teaching amenities within a striking building, which thanks to investment in its services infrastructure will reduce running costs and its overall environmental impact.”
