ISG Reveals New Elite Athlete Performance Centre In Loughborough

A key milestone has been reached in the delivery of a new Elite Athlete Performance Centre at Loughborough College – the first facility of its type in the UK. Main contractor ISG has started to dismantle the scaffolding that has surrounded the Gables complex for the past four months, revealing the newly restored façade of the mid-nineteenth century locally listed townhouse that will house the unique facility.

Jim Mutton, Loughborough College’s Principal joined Richard Scarrott, ISG’s Construction Director - Midland’s, Bob Brookes, former Loughborough College Deputy Principal, and John Boyes, Loughborough College Governor at the official unveiling of the Gables. The Elite Athlete Performance Centre represents the first phase of a £3 million investment in student accommodation facilities across the site, with ISG also underway with the construction of a three-storey, timber frame building, housing 70 en-suite student bedrooms, adjacent to the Gables.

To mark the occasion, Jim Mutton was presented with one of the simulated hawks that have been hovering over the Gables to deter birds from nesting within the building. Two flying hawk shaped decoys have become a popular sight since they were first installed at the Gables and one will now become a part of the College’s historical archive.

The external refurbishment of the historical Gables building has helped return this elegant structure to a near original condition and involved teams of skilled specialists sensitively cleaning and restoring masonry, roof and window elements. Work is also progressing well on the internal transformation of the Gables to deliver 18 high specification en-suite bedrooms, which will house some of the UK’s brightest sporting talent, between the ages of 16 and 18. Members of the English volleyball team are the first intake of elite athletes due to take up residence in the new facilities by April.

ISG’s Richard Scarrott, Construction Director - Midlands, commented: "Loughborough College must be applauded for its pioneering approach to supporting some of the UK’s most promising athletes. As we head towards the building’s completion, ISG is delighted to have played a key role in the delivery of such an innovative and forward thinking facility that will undoubtedly prove hugely beneficial to every future resident.”

Jim Mutton, Loughborough College’s Principal, added: “The Elite Athlete Performance Centre has been specifically developed to address the gap in professional and tailored support for some of our most talented young athletes. This new facility gives us the opportunity to work on an individual basis with gifted youngsters, to nurture and develop their sporting prowess and provide them with a solid grounding for their future ambitions.”
