ISG's West Lodge Project Is A Real Bute
ISG is to transform a hidden gem of Cardiff’s heritage into a community facility and tourist attraction after being awarded the contract to update Bute Park’s West Lodge by Cardiff Council.
A grade II listed Blue Lias limestone building, West Lodge has never been open to the public but has most recently served as an informal rest area and office for park staff. The project sees ISG upgrade the existing accommodation and build a 33m2extension to the rear of the building, which will house a gift shop and new toilet facilities. The internal space will be reconfigured to create a tea room downstairs with a first-floor food preparation area. Externally, a terraced seating area will be created at the side of the existing building as well as a further outdoor seating area to the rear of the property.
The scheme was designed by Davies Sutton Architect’s of Cardiff and the project funded as part of the £5.6 million Bute Park Restoration project, supported by a £3.1 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The project builds on ISG’s excellent reputation for delivering heritage schemes in South Wales, which includes the refurbishment of Cardiff’s Grade II listed Cathays Library. The contractor is recycling stone from West Lodge and other areas of the park in addition to using new Blue Lias limestone stone to ensure that the new build element of the scheme is sympathetic to the original building.
There is a watching archaeological brief across the site and ISG will work closely with a team of experts to ensure the recording and preservation of any historical remains found during the excavation phase. The project is due for completion in mid-February, ready for the tea room and gift shop to be fully operational in time for the RHS Flower show at Bute Park in April.
