ISG has been awarded a £4.5 million project by the Port of Dover to carry out extensive remodelling works to the ground floor of the existing passenger handling building, as part of extensive Traffic Management Improvements works.

The 44-week programme sees ISG open up the east and west end façades of the passenger terminal so that selected vehicles can drive into the building. The client will then demolish a number of buildings within the Eastern Dock area and create 11 additional lorry lanes, totalling over 5km in length. The project will enhance on-site capacity for vehicles arriving for ferry services and help to reduce traffic volumes around the Port of Dover approach roads.

The scheme involves extensive internal remodelling of the passenger terminal, including strip out of the luggage conveyors and the passenger luggage tunnels to the coach drop off points. ISG will reconfigure space in the passenger terminal building and create new offices. New mechanical and electrical services, including heating and ventilation systems will be installed, whilst ISG maintains services to parts of the building, which will be in use throughout the duration of the project.

In addition to opening up the ends of the building to allow vehicle entrance and exit, ISG will modify the existing curtain walling and cladding system and install new roller shutter doors. Internally, ISG will lay a new tarmac surface on the existing ground floor slab, strip out the ceilings to create increased head room in the vehicle areas and install a robust ventilation system.

ISG’s Ian Gifford, managing director – South East, commented: “Changing trends have meant that the large passenger terminal at the Port of Dover, which predominantly catered for passengers travelling on foot, is now underused. However, the volume of commercial traffic has multiplied significantly over recent years and there is an urgent requirement for upgraded facilities at the Port.

“This is an asset optimisation project that will allow our client to align greater use of the available space to current and future demand. ISG’s experience of managing large-scale projects in a complex live environment situation will prove essential in the successful outcome of this infrastructure upgrade.”
