ISG has been awarded a £6 million project to redevelop the Talbot Road Campus of Trafford College in Greater Manchester, along with an additional £200,000 scheme at the college’s Altrincham campus to provide staff rooms during the works.

The project is part of a broader regeneration strategy for the area, which aims to see an increase in the creation of jobs, improvements to highways and the physical environment, and enhanced access to sporting and training opportunities for the local community.

The scheme involves a three-phase programme with sectional completion dates leading up to project handover in September 2013, ready for the new academic year. The complex project involves extensive remodelling of the original building with significant structural alterations, in addition to the construction of a new extension.

Phase one involves remodelling and reconfiguration of the ground floor of the existing building to create open plan areas, with a new main reception and coffee bar. The contractor will also convert the existing hall into a new dining room and kitchen, enabling current dining facilities to be demolished to clear part of the site for the extension element of the scheme.

The new extension to the campus will be constructed as phase two of the scheme, accommodating new engineering workshops and car maintenance facilities, with the maintenance bays providing capacity for 16 vehicles. The extension will be built into the existing building, with some of the new accommodation within the retained façade, utilising the open plan space created during phase one. Phase two will also include works to the building’s central courtyard, including a new ‘green room’ showcasing eco technologies and new landscaping equipment and techniques.

The final phase of the project will see ISG remodel the laboratory facilities on both the ground and first floors, as well as reconfiguring and refurbishing the college’s classrooms. Externally, a new sustainable car park will be created with managed drainage and enhanced bicycle parking.

Trafford College Principal, Sir Bill Moorcroft, commented: “Following on from the highly successful development of the College’s Altrincham site, we are delighted that our plans for the extension and redevelopment of Talbot Road are moving forward. This redevelopment will not only allow us to continue to provide the highest standard of teaching and learning for our students, but it will also act as a resource for the whole community, bringing access to state-of-the-art facilities and training opportunities to local residents.’

ISG’s Jim Parker, managing director - North West, added: “Trafford College offers a diverse range of academic, vocational and recreational courses and this major redevelopment of its Talbot Road campus will enable it to refresh its facilities in line with contemporary course requirements, student lifestyles and teaching trends. It will be a challenging project with extensive structural changes to the building and a tightly managed programme to allow successive phases to progress but, once completed, will transform teaching facilities for students and staff alike.”
