ISG Secures Racquet Centre Scheme at The Hurlingham Club

ISG has been awarded a multi-million pound project to enhance sporting facilities at The Hurlingham Club in Fulham, London. A new Racquet Centre is planned for the site, providing permanent, high-specification tennis and squash facilities.

The new Racquet Centre replaces an existing marquee structure at The Hurlingham Club, which ISG will dismantle as the first phase of the project. Designed to sit sympathetically within the wider park setting, the new building by David Morley Architects, has a discrete low profile form with sunken courts and a barrel-vaulted green sedum roof to minimise its visual and environmental impact.

The steel frame structure will accommodate four tennis courts and four squash courts, designed to Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and World Squash Federation (WSF) standards respectively. ISG will also create a single multiple use games area (MUGA), changing facilities and an upper level viewing gallery running the length of the building.

The barrel-vaulted roof structure is formed using approximately 60 individual off-site manufactured timber cassettes – each 13m long and 1.2m wide. At its widest point, 40m spans of glazed roof lights maximise the volume of natural daylight entering the Racquet Centre and glazed gable ends incorporate mechanical louvers operated by a sophisticated Building Management System (BMS) to naturally ventilate the structure. The squash courts and MUGA incorporate a forced ventilation system with underfloor heating in the changing facilities.

Externally, ISG will refurbish two existing outdoor tennis courts, reinstate car parking and carry out hard and soft landscaping. The project is scheduled for completion towards the end of 2015.

Stuart Deverill, ISG’s Southern regional managing director, commented: “This prestigious scheme builds on our specialist sporting credentials, which were given a global showcase at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The new Racquet Centre at The Hurlingham Club has been carefully designed to provide a discrete and sustainable addition to the range of high-specification facilities available to members, while enhancing the built environment in this stunning parkland setting.”
