ISG has successfully completed a £4 million refurbishment of The Wood Norton, a luxurious 50-room hotel and wedding venue in Evesham, Worcestershire that previously served as an emergency broadcast centre for the BBC in World War II.

The challenging project has seen ISG transform the grade II listed Victorian property, which was originally built as a hunting lodge for of the Duc d'Aumale, the fourth son of the king of France, and his family. The historic building also served as an emergency broadcasting centre for the BBC during World War II, enabling the corporation to broadcast around 1,300 programmes a week in the relative safety of its rural location. When the war was over, it became the BBC's engineering training centre and remained in use as a BBC training facility until 2001.

ISG was awarded the fast-track refurbishment project after new owners decided to restore the property as a luxury 4* hotel, restaurant and wedding venue. The project involved restoration and upgrading accommodation in the existing 15 rooms in the main hall, along with the creation of an additional five luxury guest bedrooms.

Whilst retaining and enhancing the building’s rich heritage, ISG has brought Wood Norton into the 21st century with sensitive structural alterations to the ground floor to create a new bar and wedding reception area. Contemporary glazed bathroom pods have been introduced into a number of guest bedrooms, whilst in the main hall, the contractor has restored the beautiful oak panelled walls.

In the adjacent Pear Tree Stable Block, 30 existing guest rooms were extensively modernised, with upgraded en-suite bathroom facilities and redecoration. The programme also included redecoration of the lobby, bar and ancillary areas in the stable block and installation of new boiler plant to serve the entire hotel complex. ISG has also carried out minor repair work to the building’s façade and supervised the landscaping of the extensive grounds.

ISG worked to a demanding schedule to complete the project on time, enabling the client to take Christmas bookings, while ensuring that an impeccable standard of finish was achieved throughout.

ISG’s Jonathan Kell, managing director - Midlands, added: “ISG has wide-ranging experience in the hotel and hospitality sector and we fully understand the business critical importance of delivering a project on time and to the highest quality standards to attract and retain custom. The Wood Norton is not only steeped in history, but has now been transformed into a delightful, modern high specification hotel and is certain to prove a must-stay destination for discerning travellers and business professionals.”
