ISG Takes Two With £7 Million Enfield Council Schemes

ISG has commenced work on its latest project wins with Enfield Borough Council, securing two new contracts with a combined value of more than £7 million. The schemes at Southgate Leisure Centre and Firs Farm Primary School represent a major investment by the council into modernising and revitalising key community facilities across the borough.

The contractor has embarked upon a challenging £3.5 million project to redevelop Southgate Leisure Centre, which sees the erection of a temporary modular structure on site to re-house leisure facilities prior to the demolition of much of the existing building. ISG will then commence the construction of a new leisure centre, incorporating the existing swimming pool, which will be refurbished as part of the scheme and remain operational throughout the project. The pool will be linked to the temporary leisure facilities via two purpose-built access corridors.

The exacting programme required ISG to have the temporary facilities completed and operational within just six weeks, ahead of the demolition work, which is taking place in December. The temporary accommodation houses a reception area, changing rooms, showers, a gym, a spinning studio, a dance studio and a disabled access lift, all occupying a site to the rear of the existing building in the car park. The new leisure centre will include the same facilities with the addition of a crèche and a glass-roofed café area overlooking the pool.

The second project, at Firs Farm Primary School in Palmer’s Green, sees ISG commence a 62-week programme involving a new build extension and internal re-modelling of the existing school building, with associated landscaping, play areas and parking. Split into three phases, the £3.75 million project involves mechanical & electrical upgrade works to the existing building in phase one. Phase two sees the construction of the new extension and refurbishment of the first floor classrooms in the existing building, with the final phase focusing on the refurbishment of the ground floor classrooms and external works.

The school will remain operational throughout the programme and ISG has developed a robust schedule of works to manage the complex issues associated with working in a busy, live environment. The new build element of the scheme involves the construction of a new east and west wing. The east wing will provide new classrooms for the school while the west wing will see the contractor extend the existing school hall and kitchens, with associated works to the kitchen roof. The phase two works will complete in early October 2012 with handover of the remaining phase scheduled for December.

ISG’s Bernard Clarke, managing director - South East, commented: “Both of these projects involve managing complex construction programmes whilst maintaining continuity of services within the existing buildings. ISG’s extensive experience across similarly challenging projects is a major differentiator as is our cost-driven approach, which is essential in helping fulfil public sector best value requirements.”
