ISG has been awarded a project to convert the former West End branch of Hambros Bank into an exclusive private members wine club. The imposing Lutyen’s designed property in the heart of St James’s will be transformed into ‘67 Pall Mall’ – a clubhouse for London’s wine connoisseurs.

The project sees ISG carry out extensive structural alterations to the Grade II listed building to create the first new private members club in Pall Mall for 98 years. The contractor will remodel space at ground, lower ground and basement levels to create purpose-built accommodation for the storage and enjoyment of the world’s finest and rarest wines.

The ground floor of the three-storey clubhouse will feature a sensitively restored Members’ Lounge, a private dining facility – the ‘Lutyens Room’ and a Wine Library. The high-specification fit out of these areas includes the restoration and repair of existing oak panelling, and the use of the highest quality materials throughout. ISG will also install two mezzanine floors – one at each end of the building - on this level to create a quiet members’ lounge and back of house facilities.

At lower ground level, ISG will form a tasting and events space - the ‘St James’s Room’, which will be used for wine tastings and private functions. This floor also incorporates a full commercial kitchen serving both floors.

The transformation of the basement floor into a dedicated wine storage facility sees ISG build a series of individual cellars, including space which can be rented by members for the storage of private wine collections. The former bank’s original vault will be retained and re-used for storage of the highest value and rarest wines. A new passenger lift will also be installed, along with two dumb waiters and a specially designed vibration-free wine hoist, which will enable wine to be transported from the basement cellar to the lounge and dining facilities.

ISG will strip out and replace all mechanical and electrical systems, including a wide-ranging heating, ventilating and air conditioning installation to ensure optimum temperature control of wine storage areas and the Wine Library. Advanced lighting controls will provide mood and feature lighting throughout the clubhouse.

Peter Kilby, divisional managing director for ISG’s Hotels and Hospitality division, commented: “This is a truly unique project to create an environment where the world’s finest wines can take centre stage. Our high-end hospitality credentials, heritage building expertise and experience in London’s exclusive residential sector undoubtedly played a key role in our appointment to this multi-faceted scheme.”
