ISG Wins Major Cardiff Student Accommodation Scheme
ISG has secured is latest student accommodation project, taking a multi-million pound, 314 bed scheme in Cardiff for specialist property developer Fusion Students. In the past month, the contractor has secured a further £13 million of student accommodation wins in Edinburgh and Plymouth as demand for high-quality housing continues to surge.
Occupying a prime site in the city centre and a short walk to the major faculty buildings, the new seven-storey structure will replace Windsor House, a large 1970s concrete frame office block. The high-specification managed student accommodation will include both self-contained studios and twodios – where two students share kitchen facilities. At ground floor level, residents share an impressive range of communal amenities including a cinema, private student lounge, games room and gym.
Given the logistically complex nature of delivering a major project in a busy and tightly constrained central location, ISG will use a series of off-site manufactured components to provide efficiencies in the build programme. Constructed using a first floor concrete transfer slab with a load bearing metal panel system forming the upper floors, the building also incorporates pre-formed bathroom pods, which will be delivered to site in a just in time (JIT) basis and craned into position.
Designed to enhance the local built environment, the new accommodation features a range of architectural finishes to its façade, including brickwork, reconstituted stone, cladding panels and curtain walling. The scheme also includes secure bicycle storage facilities and a landscaped courtyard area, and is scheduled for completion in summer 2016.
