New York Design Firm Creates a James Bond Like Table for Nonprofit DIFFA at Architectural Digest Show
New York, NY, March 24, 2012 – Inspired by the gold paillette mini- dresses of 70s fashion icon Paco Rabanne and the dark, glistening aura of James Bond films, Stephen Mitchell, founder of the modernist New York-based home design brand DESIGNLUSH has fashioned a dining pavilion that is stirring the passions of guests of DIFFA’s Dining by Design like a perfectly crafted vesper martini. The table, co-sponsored by real estate powerhouse Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc. (MMPI) has lots of take-home ideas for entertaining. Notably, the place card holders,14k gold plated Slinky toys, which playfully echo the design’s golden circle theme, and serve as lighthearted conversation starters and elegant party favors.
For DESIGNLUSH, a design showroom and interior design practice specializing in modern, artisanal furniture, lighting and accessories, their Dining by Design debut is also the platform for a product launch of the artisan-crafted table, chairs, coasters, trivets, chandelier and in fact everything including the “goldlush” dining pavilion itself, which is an 11’ x 22’ weather-resistant pool cabana. The focal point is a shimmering, two-tiered rectangular gold paillette chandelier, designed by Mitchell, who commissioned it for DESIGNLUSH from Le Lebow, the Paris firm that made the original Paco Rabanne paillettes. California artist Aaron R. Thomas created the folded acrylic “dark glamor” chairs with faux chinchilla upholstery, as well as deep chocolate tinted acrylic ice buckets, and a glistening centerpiece of wine bottles that echoes a night-lit urban skyline. The bottles, along with live edge Kona coffee wood coasters and trivets, are all enrobed in real gold – white, yellow and rose tones – using a process that Thomas has adapted from industrial use to gently coat luxurious home goods in genuine precious metals. Each guest will receive a set of four gold Kona wood coasters in a tinted acrylic box by Thomas. The gift, topped by the Slinky place card holder, is nestled in a snakeskin patterned glass serving bowl with gold details, a clever stand-in for the standard charger, and is flanked by golden flatware that seems right out of a Pam Am first class cabin circa 1964. A gold Kona coaster under a Marc Blackwell gold Hemisphere champagne flute complete the imaginative setting. The table itself seats 20, with a golden, puzzle- shaped base and chocolate tinted glass top by Kentucky artist and DESIGNLUSH VP Matthew Shively.
The 15th annual event, which takes place this weekend at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show, culminates in a gala dinner Monday evening to benefit Design Industries’ Foundation Fighting AIDS. It features dining environments from top designers in the home category, including Ralph Lauren, Marimekko, Architectural Digest, Benjamin Moore and Jonathan Adler for Kravet.
