The Japan Hot List 2021
Travel abroad has been and is still restricted, including Japan. That doesn't mean there hasn't been exciting news in Japan. With the vaccines now starting to roll out, we believe it's about time that we let ourselves dream again. We present the Japan Hot List - or, all the new places and experiences there are to be excited about in Japan for 2021 and beyond for when travel restrictions lift.
Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has published the latest list of its new travel destinations and development in Japan.

The list below highlights some of our favourites from the list in no particular order.
- Sustainable Treehouse; located on the southernmost island of Japan, the subtropical Okinawa offers beautiful beaches and warm temperatures for visitors all year around. The local archipelago consists of 160 islands, just three hours by air from Tokyo. Surrounded by nothing but incredible nature, Treeful Treehouse is a sustainable resort that runs only by electricity producing solar energy. The resort is set to open in 2021.
- Japan’s first ever castle stay; NIPPONIA Hotel Ozu Castle Town opened its doors to the world in 2020. Originally built in the 16th century, the Ozu castle was fully restored with traditional methods and it is available for overnight stays. Visitors can stroll around the old townscapes that have been retained from the Edo period (1603-1867) to Meiji period (1868-1912). Ozu is located about 2.5 hours from Tokyo.
- Zero-Waste Village; located in the mountains, the town of Kamikatsu declared to become Japan’s first zero-waste town in 2003. Today it has managed to reach its recycling rate to 80% through a series of ambitious environmental initiatives. In 2020, their new ‘Zero Waste Center Why?’ complex built in a shape of question mark using recycled and reused materials has opened.
