37-tonne girders are being erected at night - Liljeholmstorget is taking shape with new building technology, new shops and more homes Rebuilding and extension of Liljeholmstorget is taking shape. At night the railway track is being decked over with 37-tonne iron girders. Agreements with major retailers who will run the shops on the square are in place and plans to increase the number of completed homes by 70% are already under way. A living Stockholm district will become reality when the new Liljeholmstorget is completed. Liljeholmstorget is being extended with 200 apartments, 3,000 sq.m. of retail space, a town square, a subway station under one of the buildings and, below ground, a new bus terminal and waiting room as well as parking. In planning terms Liljeholmstorget is a challenge which it has taken JM and its co-operation partners SL and the City of Stockholm seven years to finalise. Construction of the superstructure over the railway tracks has now started. The method chosen will disrupt travel as little as possible and is mostly carried out at night between 02.00 and 04.00 using a system of girders which are 5 metres high, 45 metres long and weigh 37 tonnes which are lifted into place. Each girder system consists of three columns and two girders which are bolted together on the ground during the day when test lifts are also carried out. This work is scheduled for completion by midsummer. One of the two new blocks will be built above the tracks. New building technology with replaceable steel springs is being used to avoid vibration in the buildings. An agreement has also been concluded with Coop Sweden which will rent approximately 1,500 sq.m. of retail space. "We are realising our aim to urbanise Liljeholmstorget which is a unique place in terms of location and the different forms of public transport and we are now also examining the possibility of increasing the number of homes from the planned 200 to 340," says Anette Frumerie, project manager, JM Residential.
