Architectural simplicity gives old industrial land a clear profile Co-operation between JM and the City of Stockholm, will put new life into old industrial land when the first multi-storey dwellings in the Stockholm district of Solhem are ready for tenants. Solhem is characterised by architectural simplicity and is an example of JM's efforts to develop a basic product in order to extend its product range to different target groups. Phase 1 in the Stockholm district of Solhem's new multi-storey dwelling area in Spånga will soon be ready for tenants. The City of Stockholm and JM started work in 1995 with the aim of creating new homes close to central Stockholm, Solhem is transforming parts of the Lunda industrial estate into residential areas of some 300 apartments, several adapted for group living and handicapped people. Solhem is characterised by architectural simplicity. A return to the 1950s trends of thrift and functionalism's obsession with measurement and design with straight buildings and lines, small windows and space- and cost-effective solutions. "Solhem contains generous homes where we have worked to refine simplicity and developed a basic product. The block increases JM's range of homes and provides a wider offering for different target groups, says Catherina Fored, project manager, JM Residential. Solhem will increase the variety of residential alternatives in the district and will be integrated with existing industrial activities while the local infrastructure will be reinforced with new streets, pre- schools and schools. Efforts have also been made to provide plenty of vegetation and green areas. Spånga with Spånga Centrum and Bromsten is a city development area which is undergoing a major transformation. Solhem is part of this and will be integrated with and strengthen Spånga Centrum.
