Industristaden - Uppsala's answer to Docklands On 5 November the first spade-cut was made in Industristaden in Kungsängen, Uppsala's new gateway to the south. The initial phase comprises 50 apartments to be built by JM. The Industristaden project involves converting an industrial site into a residential area in the centre of Uppsala. Industristaden is influenced by similar projects such as the Eriksberg area in Gothenburg and the London Docklands. "About 500 people have put their names down and 20 of the first 50 apartments, which will be ready for occupancy in autumn 2004, have been sold. This substantial demands shows that the area's central location carries more weight than its industrial character which is fast becoming history," says Håkan Lundqvist, project manger, JM AB, East Region. The first phase comprises 50 residential units housed in a seven-floor building, ranging from 54 sq.m. one-room flats to 132 sq.m. five-room flats with parking spaces in the basement. In addition to residential units the area will include workplaces, shops and services. Great care is being devoted to the architecture in order to strengthen the marine image.
