JM builds new homes in Gamla Mejeriet in central Uppsala JM has now started the first of two phases, with a total of 80 apartments, in Gamla Mejeriet (the Old Dairy) in central Uppsala just north of the central station. This project involves refurbishment of two existing buildings from the 1850s as well as construction of a total of four new buildings. The first phase comprises 45 new apartments sized from 2 rooms and kitchen with approximately 78 sq.m. up to 5 rooms and kitchen with approximately 140 sq.m. All the apartments will have a balcony, loggia or terrace. The buildings vary in size between three and four floors and are usually complemented with an upper floor in the form of a studio apartment set back from the facade. The rendered facades in warm, earthy colours are dominated by large windows and French windows which make each apartment light and airy. The buildings in the block follow the structure of the city's gridiron plan with buildings, fencing and porticos at the perimeters. The area is closed off from the surrounding streets in a manner which conforms well with the character of central Uppsala. An arcade with shops is being built over the pavement on Vaksalagatan. Occupation in the first phase of the project will start in autumn 2003. The entire project is scheduled for completion in autumn 2004 and the order value is estimated at approximately SEK 175m.
