John Woods Nurseries – New Introductions 2012

Cornus x ‘Celestial Shadow’

Found in the US by Don Shadow as a chance sport of Cornus x Celestial™, Cornus ‘Celestial Shadow’ is a florida kousa cross, growing up to 7 metres in 10 years. The plant, one of the more vigorous variegated Cornus kousa/ florida types, is notable for its clear, bright foliage with a red tint which arrives in spring and remains throughout autumn.

Cornus x ‘Celestial Shadow’ flowers in spring, producing bracts of 7cm in diameter and provides multiple seasons of interest. It offers an alternative to a tree where space is limited and makes an ideal gift or investment plant.

Available April 2012, Suggested retail selling price (SRSP): £66.00 per 7.5 litre pot.

Fairy Magnolia® Blush

Fairy Magnolia (Michelia) Blush, a member of the Magnolia family, was raised by New Zealand breeder, Mark Jury (Magnolia Black Tulip). An evergreen to semi-evergreen, the plant has a bushy habit, dense dark green leaves and, from a young age, produces russet coloured buds that open to lightly fragrant blooms of 5cm in diameter from March to May. Eventual height and spread are up to 2.7m x 2.4m.

Fairy Magnolia Blush is hardy down to -15°c, can tolerate full sun to partial shade and performs well in a range of soils, preferring well drained conditions.

Available April / May 2012, SRSP: £37.00 per 5 litre pot.

Hibiscus Pink Chiffon

Hibiscus Pink Chiffon is a syriacus cultivar bred by UK breeder Dr Woods as part of The Chiffon Series. Performing best in a sunny position and well drained soil, this easy care, hardy deciduous shrub will flower on new wood from July to September and reach an eventual height and spread of 2.5m x 2.5m.

Hibiscus Pink Chiffon is protected by plant breeders’ rights.

Available July 2012, SRSP: £14.00 per 3 litre pot.

Alstroemeria Rock n Roll®

The striking new Alstroemeria Rock n Roll is a ligtu species that will provide a stunning addition to any garden display. Its yellow variegation matures to white with a green edge and combines dramatically with dark red flowers which are produced repeatedly though to autumn, making a long-lasting cut bloom.

The Alstroemeria Rock n Roll’s growth, which reaches eventual height and spread of 90cm x 60cm, is compact and clump forming.

Available May 2012, SRSP: £10.00 per 2 litre pot.
