Whilst horned helmets are a definite no-no for York’s Vikings, cream horns will be more than welcome as part of a brand new event for the JORVIK Viking Festival’s Great Viking Bake Off, being held on Sunday 22 February in York’s Guildhall.

The competition, which is open to anyone who fancies showing off their baking skills, will see entrants swap sword for palette knife, shield for bowl scraper and armour for apron in four different categories looking for:

-          The best Viking-shaped cake

-          The best Viking iced and decorated cake

-          The best Viking biscuits

-          The best Viking Cupcakes

“After all of the excitement of spectacular finale event on 21 February, we wanted a light-hearted way to bring the 31stJORVIK Viking Festival to a close, and what better way to end the celebrations than with a slice of cake?” asks festival director, Danielle Daglan.  “We’ve got children’s categories for under 5s, 6-10 years and 11-16 years, plus the real challenge for anyone aged 17 and over, so we’re hoping for some superb cakes and treats!”

Entry forms are available online from the JORVIK Viking Festival website (www.jorvik-viking-festival.co.uk) and it is free to enter.  Once the cakes have been judged by an independent panel, bakers are invited to offer the cakes for sale to the wider public to raise funds for York Archaeological Trust, the education charity which organises the Festival.
