London, 05 July 2010: As part of the company’s increasing presence within the world of Formula 1™ racing, LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in consumer electronics, has become the title sponsor for this year’s F1 in Schools World Finals in Singapore.

Traditionally supported by the FIA Formula One World Championship™, as well as several Formula 1 teams, the F1 in Schools World Finals will now be backed by LG, a Global Partner and a Technological Partner of Formula 1™ since the start of the 2009 season.

The F1 in Schools Global Technology Challenge is already underway for 2010 reaching millions of students aged 11 to 19 years old, across 32 countries. The competition first took place in the United Kingdom in 1999, before becoming a national competition the following year. Since then, the initiative has enjoyed year-on-year international growth with 2010 marking the sixth World Finals.

Participants enter in teams to design their own small-scale Formula 1 car, with the car’s speed and design being judged, as well as the team’s business plan for the scheme. National heats and finals take place in each country, before finalists head to the World Finals, held in Singapore this year, where they compete for various awards including the Bernie Ecclestone World Champions Trophy.

“It’s a pleasure to have LG come on board for 2010,” said Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman of F1 in Schools. “The F1 in Schools Global Technology Challenge is going from strength to strength and has always been well looked after by the Formula 1 community. It’s great to see that LG is following suit and taking their significant F1 presence to help our global educational initiative.”

Andrew Barrett, VP Global Sponsorship for LG Electronics, added: “As a global consumer electronics leader and a technology partner of Formula 1, we are always looking for ways to extend our engagement with the technology aspects of the sport.  We could think of no better way to do this. Encouraging the next generation of engineers and technology specialists through The F1 in Schools Global Technology Challenge is an exciting way of bringing motorsport to a younger audience. Following this announcement, we will be working hard to bring this program to life in the 32 countries around the world contesting for a place in the F1 in Schools World Finals with LG.”
