A river runs through it: the watery world of painter Sarah Wenden revealed at the River & Rowing Museum.

Visitors to the River & Rowing Museum’s Kirkham Gallery in January will be transported to a watery world through a new exhibition of mixed-media paintings by Oxfordshire based artist Sarah Wenden.

Opening on 21 January, this exhibition of 30 new works features a collection of beautiful and dynamic depictions of riverbanks – a subject matter Wenden has devoted her artistic career to.  For this new exhibition, which Wenden has been creating since 2008, she has captured the Thames and its lesser-known tributaries near her home in Oxford, becoming captivated not only by reflections in the water but by the way it has shaped the landscape it passes through. The works on display will also be available for purchase – further information available from the Museum upon request: museum@rrm.co.uk

Alongside her distinctively bold, brightly-coloured collages and intense yet contemplative oil paintings will also be displayed a number of her preparatory sketch books, allowing visitors to trace the artist’s process from the initial drawings through to the finished works.

Sarah Wenden, who’s career spans over 30 years, is a master in the art of capturing the light reflected on water and her vivid depictions of Britain’s riverbanks have been exhibited all over the UK. Her work is celebrated in public and private collections across the UK and abroad and her impressive career includes residencies at Kew Gardens and teaching positions at several art schools including the Cardiff Art School where she was a Junior Fellow.

Artist Sarah Wenden said: “I have always had a fascination with the beauty and complexity of water.  It’s a wonderful challenge to capture the light dazzling off its surface, or portray its movement and power through paint.  This new collection is especially close to my heart as it depicts the riverbanks of my home near Oxford. I’m delighted to be showing my work at the River & Rowing Museum”
