Commonwealth Institute reopens after ten year long refurb to become major tourist attraction

London W8, UK: The Commonwealth Institute – closed for ten years and due to become the New Design Museum in 2014 – is the dramatic stage for performances by Rambert Dance Company, Akademi and Opera Holland Park next month.

This is not your average press call. Hear about the sinapse jerking events, from wolf packs roaming Brompton Cemetery, being smacked by clowns while blindfold – while roped together with others in a war scene.

InTRANSIT two day festival launch runs 15-17 July – while the main festival is 22-31 July. Inspired by the building, 53 Commonwealth nations are represented by various artistic works such as birdsong from 53 species. Directed by Harry Ross these specially commissioned pieces shed light on the Borough’s most secretive building before it goes back into the public realm.

Summary of InTRANSIT 2011 (15 to 17 July)

  • Now in its fourth year, InTRANSIT events are mainly free. Take part in three days of music and dance with roving urban arts events scattered across Kensington and Chelsea’s public and hidden spots. Creatives from Rambert Dance Company, Opera Holland Park and others will showcase new music and dance works in reaction to this historic building – closed for the last ten years and soon to be transformed as the new Design Museum.
  • Rampage with WOLF through Brompton Cemetery as part of a pack. WOLF will sing, howl and cajole your inner animus with their storytelling.
  • Board the N11 Night Bus from Liverpool Street for a journey like never before. On board artists bring the route to life.
  • Subversive duo ‘Il Pixel Rosso’ put you in a wheelchair with video headset dressed as clowns. The rest you need to see for yourself.
  • Beautiful Holland Park Orangery is the setting for performance based on Honore de Balzac’s “La Peau de Chagrin”. Think gambling dens and sordid boudoirs of 19th Century Paris in this Faustian tale of gratification and desire.
