Australia’s Northern Territory stages a host of annual events to appeal to a multitude of visitors – cultural celebrations, wacky races and outback occasions, there is something for everyone! So whether you’re visiting the tropical Top End or Outback Red Centre, time your visit with one of these must-see events. Lions Imparja Alice Springs Camel Cup 10th July 2010 The 40th anniversary of this very entertaining event happens this year and it’s still as much fun as ever although racing a camel isn’t as easy as it seems! Camels are incredibly stubborn and often provide great comedy, but the persistent riders will endeavour to race their chosen beast around the Blatherskite Park in Alice Springs. The first Camel Race was run in 1970 in the dry Todd River Bed as a bet between two mates, Noel Fullerton and Keith Mooney-Smith but now the quirky day-celebration draws over 4,500 spectators from all over the world and includes children’s events, food and drink stalls and even belly-dancing performances! www.camelcup.com.au Qantas Holidays eight-night Red Centre and Camel Cup: From £2,769 per person (subject to availability and based on two adults sharing). Includes return flights from the UK and domestic flights and transfers, three nights’ accommodation in Sydney, five nights’ accommodation in Alice Springs and a camel tour of Uluru (Ayers Rock). For more information or to book visit Qantasholidays.co.uk or call 020 8222 9124. Garma Festival 6th – 10th August 2010 Gulkula in North East Arnhem Land is the setting for the 12th Garma Festival this year. The celebration of indigenous practices and traditions includes dancing, singing and art. The cultural significance of Garma is recognised nationally as it’s a major forum on indigenous issues. Garma is a unique combination of education, entertainment and real cultural interaction, exchange and immersion. It is indeed a privilege to experience Garma, and there are several categories of registration available for visitors to become more familiar with a culture that dates back over 40,000 years. www.garma.telstra.com Travelmood seven-day Darwin and Arnhem Land: From £3,139 per person (subject to availability and based on two adults sharing). Includes return flights from London Heathrow to Darwin with Qantas departing throughout August 2010, three nights’ accommodation in Darwin and a five-day Kakadu, Arnhem Land and Cobourg Peninsula Safari. For more information or to book visit Travelmood.com or call 0800 8407 802. The Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta 8th August 2010 This regatta embodies Aussie spirit – great fun, fearless and a little bit different! Where else in the world would brave teams build boats out of empty beer cans and then sail their vessels from Mindil Beach in Darwin harbour - a harbour twice the size of Sydney’s harbour! Great fun to watch and even more fun to take part in! www.beercanregatta.org.au Austravel six-day Darwin and Top End Regatta: From £1,899 per person (subject to availability and based on two adults sharing). Includes return flights from London Heathrow with Qantas departing on the 6th August 2010, five nights’ accommodation in Darwin, Litchfield National Park day tour and Kakadu National Park day tour. Darwin Festival 12th – 29th August 2010 The Northern Territory’s laid-back, cosmopolitan capital Darwin celebrates the diversity of the region with an annual celebration which includes a feast of local, national and international performances to excite, inspire and entertain. Darwin boasts the perfect weather for this 18 night extravaganza which includes everything from free outdoor events to theatre, dance, music, cabaret, films, workshops and comedy, not to mention the sensational cuisine. With over 70 productions, 112 events and performances and over 1,000 international, national and Territory artists and cultural groups, the Darwin Festival reflects the indigenous cultures of the region. www.darwinfestival.org.au Trailfinders seven-night Darwin package: From £1,499 per person (subject to availability and based on two adults sharing). Includes return flights from London to Alice Springs with Qantas from 11th August onwards and seven nights’ accommodation in Darwin. For more information or to book visit Trailfinders.com or call 0845 050 5871. ASSA ABLOY Henley-On-Todd Regatta 21st August 2010 If Fred Flintstone organised a regatta – this would be it! A boat race with a difference on the dry sands of the Todd River, which started in 1962, when a local man decided to start a regatta based on the famous Oxbridge UK boat race. Have fun and enjoy the hilarity as you watch seemingly sane people race in bottomless 'eights', 'oxford tubs', 'bath tubs' and 'yachts' through the deep coarse sand in Outback Alice Springs. www.henleyontodd.com.au Austravel six-day Alice ‘Henley’ package: From £1,759 per person (subject to availability and based on two adults sharing). Includes return flights from London Heathrow departing on 10th August, five nights’ accommodation in Alice Springs, Alice Springs highlights tour and 30 minute Outback hot air ballooning experience.
