  • Novartis/NFYFC scholar’s report looks at the spread of anthelmintic resistance in New Zealand
  • Scholar gained knowledge about good drenching practice on sheep stations
  • Differences in farming systems in the UK and New Zealand

14th Feb 2011 An animal health adviser who won a travel scholarship to New Zealand to study the sheep industry there has published a report on anthelmintic resistance.

Sarah Grantham, 22, who works for Masstock Arable in Ludlow, travelled to New Zealand in October last year after winning the Novartis Animal Health/National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (NFYFC) sponsored award.

The report outlines how the problem of anthelmintic resistance developed in New Zealand, and how the farming industry eventually started to confront it.

While on her travels, Sarah visited several sheep stations in different parts of the country and interviewed a series of specialists on parasite control, including Professor Dave Leathwick, who is a world authority on drench efficacy and the causes of resistance.

Her report also looks at the differences in farming systems and feed inputs between New Zealand and the UK.

“It was a great privilege to visit New Zealand and spend time on the sheep stations. This was a real opportunity to learn and I hope bring back some useful knowledge that is relevant to UK farming methods

“Anthelmintic resistance is a real problem in both countries, and I think it is extremely useful to learn from farmers in another country about good drenching practice, and how they maintain healthy flocks,” said Sarah.

Simon Harris, Farm Animal Product Manager at Novartis, said: “We are delighted that Sarah was able to learn so much about the important issues that affect sheep farmers in New Zealand, and compare them to her UK experiences.”

“It is very encouraging that she can share her experiences, and help to spread the message about the importance of tackling anthelmintic resistance head on in both countries,” he said.
