Bunn to focus on optimising forage yields at Livestock 2012 event

Fertiliser blender and distributor J&H Bunn Ltd (Bunn) will highlight the importance of optimum grassland nutrition in maximising forage production and farm profitability on its stand (FF433) at the Livestock 2012, incorporating the Dairy Event, which will be held at The NEC, Birmingham on 4th/5th September.

The company will feature Koch Advanced Nitrogen®, SupaGraze™ and SupaCut™ fertiliser products, which offer farmers significant benefits in terms of improving grassland productivity and profitability.  Bunn technical experts will be on hand at Livestock 2012 to discuss the benefits of each fertiliser.

David Harrod, commercial director for Bunn states: “Grass has not always received the attention it deserves. However, with feed prices still high, beef and dairy producers are naturally keen to make the most of grass and now taking it as seriously as arable crops. This really is the time to focus on maximising the production and quality of grass and grass silage, which are the most cost-effective means of obtaining digestible energy.”

Containing 46% N, compared with 34.5% N for ammonium nitrate (AN), Koch Advanced Nitrogen® fertiliser delivers comparable performance to AN in terms of nitrogen remaining available for the crop, and yield. Koch Advanced Nitrogen® fertiliser also offers growers added benefits due to a lower cost per unit of nitrogen and logistics advantages. These advantages include time savings through more efficient application, a reduction in packaging waste, and easier storage and handling due to not being subject to the regulatory burdens placed on AN.

The effectiveness of Koch Advanced Nitrogen® fertiliser has been widely demonstrated in trials, including the ADAS-led DefraNT26 project. The study showed that the fertiliser performed as well as AN in grassland trials. Dr. Catherine Watson[1] of the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute in Northern Ireland also found that this advanced fertiliser produced a 19.9% improvement over ordinary urea in terms of nitrogen utilisation by the grass, resulting in an 8.8% increase in drymatter tonnage.

SupaCut™ and SupaGraze™ fertiliser products, Bunn’s specialist fertilisers for silage and grazing, provide an optimum balance of nitrogen, phosphate, potash, magnesium, sulphur and sodium for maximum yield and animal nutrition.

The SupaCut fertiliser range of custom-blended fertilisers has been formulated for intensive silage or hay production. This range contains Magnesia-Kainit®, a water-soluble ore containing magnesium, sodium, sulphur and other trace elements, providing sufficient nutrients in the correct balance for intensive silage production.

The SupaGraze fertiliser range is suited for permanent grazing land and pastures following first-cut silage. Also containing Magnesia-Kainit®, this range is ideal for a first fertiliser spring dressing followed-on with additional applications during the season to provide the correct balance of nutrient salts for grazing animals.

Founded in 1816, Bunn offers an extensive range of products which include a combination of straight fertiliser grades as well as custom blends which it sells through distributors and direct to farm. The company has eight port terminal locations, stretching from Montrose in Scotland to Falmouth in Cornwall, providing a complete service to British agriculture.
