The Red Squirrel Survival Trust (RSST) – the UK’s national red squirrel conservation charity – has today announced that Katie Hillier, one of the UK’s most influential names in British fashion is to join its team of celebrity Ambassadors.

Katie, best known for her high profile work in the design of handbags, jewellery and hair accessories, is concerned that ignorance, or even apathy, around the threat to one of our most loved woodland creatures may prove disastrous for the native red squirrel and she is joining forces with other celebrities to help increase awareness of the issue.

Her growing list of awards, including Accessory Designer of the Year at The British Fashion Awards in 2009, her recently becoming the “face” of Hunter Wellingtons, her highly acclaimed range of unique animal “paper clip” pendants and a voice on Vogue magazine through her blog all provide Katie with opportunities in which she can share her passion and determination to save the species.

Says Katie .... “I am very fond of the red squirrel - such charming little creatures sadly in vast decline. As part of our national heritage its vitally important that we make every effort we can to protect and preserve this wonderful inhabitant for future generations to enjoy and fall in love with as much as I have. I am delighted to play a part in supporting their plight with the RSST and doing all that I can to secure their future”.

Janet Wickens of RSST is delighted with this appointment. She commented   “Katie brings an added dimension to our work and we are thrilled to be working with her. She demonstrates that the great British public, in so many different walks of life, have a real desire to protect our native red squirrel. The fashion world is once again proving that it can take a lead on issues that matter to the people of the UK”.
