Terrorism cover mutual UMSR appoints new chairman

UM Association (Special Risks) Ltd, which provides terrorism cover for 111 leading Universities and Colleges in the UK, has appointed a new Chairman.

Jon Gorringe, who is currently Director of Finance at Edinburgh University, served as Deputy Chairman at UMSR before taking up his new appointment.

Mr Gorringe said that in the current economic climate, the drive for efficiency in procurement presented great opportunities for mutual organisations serving the sector.

“When UMSR was set up in 1993 it was quite evidently ahead of its time. The fact that UMSR is still going from strength to strength shows that working together on a mutual basis, and with a high degree of professionalism, can be a hugely successful formula,” he said.

“At the moment Universities are being increasingly encouraged to share services and the cost of services. This is precisely what we started doing in 1993, and is a good example of how the mutual system can save a lot of money and provide the highest level of service,” he said.

Mr Gorringe said he was proud to take on his new role as Chairman, and keen to improve and sustain the achievements of the past two decades.

“The fact that we’ve got scale is a testimony to our successes over the year, but we need to continue to grow for the benefit of all our members and the Higher and Further Education sector as a whole,” he said.

Mr Gorringe was appointed as Director of Finance at Edinburgh in 2005, prior to which he was Director of Finance at both the Universities of Leicester and Essex. He is a member of the Employers Pensions Forum for UK Universities.

The 111 members of UMSR represent a substantial portion of the market. Members’ funds in the scheme are currently in excess of £17 million and the declared assets protected exceed £60 billion.
