Klimator’s technology will improve the Swedish Transport Administration's friction data

Report this content

Klimator enters a collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration and Luleå University of Technology to be able to model road friction during wintertime on roads with multiple lanes. The order value for the project is 1.29 MSEK that runs for two and a half years.

The software company Klimator has together with Swedish Transport Administration and Luleå University of Technology, developed an innovation project with the aim of enabling reference measurements of road conditions and friction on roads with multiple lanes. The project involves the implementation of Klimator's detective technology AHEAD which, during the project, will be combined with friction information from Floating Car Data (FCD) to improve the understanding and interpretation of FCD on roads with multiple lanes during wintertime.

The aim of the project is to address the problem with different frictions in different lanes over the same stretch of road, which mainly occurs during winter. As the difference in friction can be large over the same stretch of road, models need to be developed to enable the interpretation of FCD to demonstrate this. This is particularly important to enable the Swedish Transport Administration to monitor and follow-up winter road maintenance. The project's focus is therefore on developing a reliable interpretation of the friction estimate for each individual lane.

About AHEAD

AHEAD is an embedded sensor technology that analyzes the road surface and friction ahead of a vehicle in motion, in real-time. The technology is the result of over ten years of research and development within road surface classification. AHEAD provides vehicle systems with information on prevailing road surface conditions, which increases the functionality, operability, and use of advanced driver support systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD) technologies.

About Klimator

Klimator AB is a publicly listed software company with over 30 years of research in applied road climatology. Klimator has two innovations – the data platform Road Condition Data (RCD), providing predictive high precision road weather information, and the sensor fusion solution AHEAD providing real-time detective road weather information. With these innovations, Klimator provides precise and reliable road weather information to the winter maintenance and the automotive industries creating safer roads and enabling scalable autonomous driving and intelligent driver support systems. In 2020, Klimator acquired HedeDanmark's business operations within connected sensors to broaden and strengthen Klimator's product portfolio.
