PORTLAND, Ore. (May 5, 2015) –Teaching is more than a job, it’s a passion. For some, like KinderCare teacher Betty Wheeler, it’s a lifetime career.

Wheeler, of Alexandria, Va., is KinderCare’s longest serving teacher, having educated children at her center for the past 41 years.

“I love being with children,” Wheeler said. “When you have a three-year-old class, you have to be three. When you have a five-year-old class, you have to be five. When they’re here you see them grow and develop, and I really love being a part of that.”

In time with National Teacher Appreciation Week, which begins today, KinderCare’s parent company, Knowledge Universe, conducted a study into which states have the longest serving preschool teachers. The study found 634 teachers have taught at KinderCare Learning Centers for 20 years or more.

“There are many opportunities for teachers to fulfill their career goals in early childhood education,” said Linda Hassan Anderson, Vice President of Education at Knowledge Universe. “So we are particularly proud of our veteran teachers who have chosen to dedicate and commit themselves to serving children and families in their centers and communities.”

Knowledge Universe provides employees professional training, educational reimbursements, and in 2014 gave its employees $34 million in childcare discounts that helped more than 8,500 employees access early childhood education programs for their children.

“We are proud of our teachers who have a lasting impact on the lives of children across the country every single day,” said Dr. Elanna Yalow, CEO of Knowledge Universe Early Learning Programs. “Their longevity is a testament to their passion for children and dedication to early childhood education.”
