Funding worth SEK 29 million from Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation’s mathematics program will be granted 18 mathematicians for their research. Over a period of 15 years, the Foundation is providing in total SEK 650 million for high-level mathematics research.

The mathematics program is a long-term investment from Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.  SEK 650 million will be granted to Swedish mathematics research between 2014 and 2029. Younger and more experienced senior mathematicians are recruited to Sweden every year, and young Swedish mathematicians are given the opportunity to travel, through international postdoctoral position.

“Including this round, 152 researchers have now received funding through the program, and we can see that this investment is having effect. Sweden has begun to regain a leading international role in mathematics, which is necessary if we are also to be at the forefront of future areas such as data-driven life science, AI and quantum technology, in which the Foundation is also making significant investments,” says Peter Wallenberg Jr, Chair of Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

Swedish universities with a mathematics department are able to nominate candidates for the program. Nominees are then evaluated by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

“Demand for mathematics expertise has grown in recent years, not least due to developments in the field of AI. This program will be incredibly important in providing Sweden with skilled mathematicians in the years ahead, so we are delighted to be able to help identify talented people who are worth investing in,” says Hans Ellegren, Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Six researchers receive international postdoctoral positions and funding for two years after they return to Sweden:

Dr Jiacheng Xia, Chalmers University of Technology (University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA)
Doctoral student Josefien Kuijper, Stockholm University (University of Toronto, Canada
Doctoral student Stefan Reppen, Stockholm University (University of California, Berkeley, USA)
Doctoral student Linnéa Gyllingberg, Uppsala University (University of California, Los Angeles, USA)
Doctoral student Robin Stoll, Stockholm University (University of Cambridge, UK)
Doctoral student Louis Hainaut, Stockholm University (University of Chicago, Illinois, USA)

Five researchers receive grants to recruit a foreign researcher for a postdoctoral position in Sweden:

Dr Eusebio Gardella, University of Gothenburg
Dr Gustavo Jasso Ahuja, Lund University
Dr Danijela Damjanović, KTH Royal Institute of Technology
Dr Christian Johansson, University of Gothenburg
Professor Klas Modin, Chalmers University of Technology

Six established researchers from outside Sweden will be visiting professors at Swedish universities (in brackets)

Professor Christina Lienstromberg, University of Stuttgart, Germany (Lund University)
Professor Rita Pardini, University of Pisa, Italy (Stockholm University)
Professor Jonathan Breuer, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel (KTH Royal Institute of Technology)
Professor Mario Wüthrich, ETH Zurich, Switzerland (Stockholm University)
Professor Ezra Getzler, Northwestern University, Illinois, USA (Uppsala University)
Professor Marco Martens, Stony Brook University, New York, USA (Uppsala University)
Professor Steffen Rohde, University of Washington, USA (KTH Royal Institute of Technology)

About the program

Over the years 2014–2029, the program is providing SEK 650 million to allow Swedish researchers to receive international postdoctoral positions, as well as the international recruitment of visiting professors and of foreign researchers to postdoctoral positions at Swedish universities. The program also includes funding worth SEK 73 million for the Royal Academy of Sciences’ Institut Mittag-Leffler, one of the world’s ten leading mathematics institutions.
