Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation donates SEK 280 million to forest research
The focus of the donation is on the fields of forest biology, forest genetics and forest production at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala University, Umeå university and Science for Life Laboratory in Stockholm-Uppsala.
The Swedish forest has always played a major role in the Swedish economy and employment. In the future, the forest will also be a central part of the future bioeconomy, where more and more oil-based products are replaced by products that are created based on the tree's constituents.
Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation has previously allocated SEK 525 million for research on new forest-based products at the Wallenberg Wood Science Center 2.0 and the MAX IV Laboratory for the period 2019-2028. As a complement to this, the Foundation now donates SEK 280 million as a part of its life science initiative during the same period to research within forest biology, forest genetics and forest production.
“We see a need to develop basic biology and technology that can increase production in our forests in an environmentally friendly manner and we hope that the Foundation's investment in basic research in the forest area can lay the foundation for such a development,” says Peter Wallenberg Jr, chairman of Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation was established in 1917. The Foundation’s aim is to benefit Sweden by supporting Swedish basic research and education, primarily in medicine, technology and the natural sciences. This is achieved by awarding grants to excellent researchers and projects.
Since the establishment SEK 30 billion in grants has been awarded, with annual funding of SEK 1.8 billion in recent years, making the Foundation the largest private funder of scientific research in Sweden, and one of the largest in Europe.
