Sara Mazur takes office as Executive Director of Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation on January 1, 2024.

“Sara has worked with us in various capacities for five years and is well acquainted with the Foundation's operations. As Chair of the large WASP and WISE programs, she has worked closely with the universities but has also contributed to broadening competence building in the areas by working for collaborations with both the private and public sectors. We look forward to working with Sara in our ongoing work to develop the Foundation's operations,” says Peter Wallenberg Jr, Chair of the Foundation.

Sara Mazur has a master’s degree in electrical engineering and is an associate professor in fusion plasma physics. She worked at Ericsson between 1995 and 2018, for the last six years as Vice President and Head of Ericsson Research. Sara Mazur is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. In 2018, she joined Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation as responsible for the Foundation's strategic initiatives. Since July 2022, she has been deputy Executive Director of the Foundation.

“I see it as a great privilege to be able to lead an organization that has contributed to strengthening Swedish research for over a hundred years. The Foundation's grants to free basic research at Swedish universities are widely significant,” says Sara Mazur.

Sara Mazur succeeds Göran Sandberg. Sandberg will remain in the Wallenberg Foundations' organization in other roles.

“I would also like to thank Göran Sandberg, who during his 14 years as Executive Director has been involved in and transformed the Foundation's work through the design of the individual research programs and the strategic projects as well as by developing the Foundation's relations with academia and industry, things that led to Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation being considered as one of the world's leading research foundations. We are happy to continue to be able to take advantage of his experience and foresight in the Foundations' operations,” says Peter Wallenberg Jr.

Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation was established in 1917. The aim of the Foundation is to benefit Swedish basic research and education, primarily in medicine, technology and the natural sciences. This is achieved by awarding grants to excellent researchers and projects. Since 1917, the Foundation has allocated SEK 35 billion, of which close to SEK 2.2 billion was granted in 2022 for excellent research and education. This makes the Foundation Sweden's largest private research funder and one of the largest in Europe.
