Nov. 29, 2011 – Oporto’s The Restaurant at the Yeatman has won its first Michelin star, under the direction of Chef Ricardo Costa, confirming its status as Portugal’s rising star among new, European luxury restaurants and travel destinations.

The award, announced in Barcelona on November 24, distinguishes The Yeatman as one of only twelve restaurants in Portugal with a Michelin rating. It is the first in Oporto, Portugal's gateway city to several of the country's wine regions.

Opened in September 2010 by The Fladgate Partnership, The Yeatman has catapulted to the top of the “must visit” list of world class resorts in just over a year. Located in the heart of Oporto, one of Europe’s most magnificently preserved cities and a UNESCO World Heritage site, the hotel offers ultra-luxurious suites, a vinotherapy spa, the largest collection of Portuguese wines in the world, unrivaled wine experiences and an exquisite and innovative restaurant.

Chef Ricardo Costa previously worked at Casa do Calçada which also won a Michelin star during his tenure. At The Yeatman, he puts a contemporary twist on classical Portuguese dishes and flavors, working in tandem with the hotel’s Wine Director Beatriz Machado to create bold and exciting wine paired dinners.

“I am delighted to receive a Michelin star as a recognition of my team’s work. This is the ‘Oscars’ of the restaurant world,” said Chef Costa, “and we are excited to showcase the very best Portuguese cuisine using local ingredients. We look forward to welcoming everyone to our restaurant and special wine dinners.”

The Yeatman CEO, Adrian Bridge added, “We are delighted by this award and the recognition of Chef Ricardo Costa and his team’s accomplishments. The Yeatman is an ambitious project that will offer a new level of experience in food and wine for discerning travelers who visit Oporto and northern Portugal. The quality of food, paired with the best wine list in Portugal, provides our guests with one of the greatest possible culinary experiences in Portugal.”

The Michelin award follows last month’s awarding of Relais & Chateaux status to The Yeatman establishing it as Europe’s top new destination for luxury wine tourism.

About The Yeatman

The Yeatman hotel opened August 10th, 2010 and is the property of The Fladgate Partnership, a family based management group. Its principal business, the production and marketing of premium Port Wine, was established over three centuries ago in 1692.

The group is the owner of three of the most famous Port brands and some of the finest vineyard estates in the Douro Valley. The Fladgate Partnership also has extensive experience in the hospitality industry. In the mid-1990’s it opened the first world class hotel in the Douro Valley, a Relais & Châteaux property which helped establish the Port vineyard region as a destination for luxury wine tourism.

The Fladgate Partnership’s subsidiary Três Séculos operates a high quality restaurant and banqueting service. The group’s expertise in fine wine production and luxury hotel management now combine to establish The Yeatman as one of the world’s leading wine hotels.
