Fuel-efficient, emissions-compliant Kohler diesel engines enter production for telescopic forklift

Kohler®Engines and Italy-based Lombardini  – a KOHLER® Company, has begun manufacturing its KDI engines for British construction equipment company JCB. The JCB agreement is one of numerous partnerships underway to incorporate Kohler’s newest heavy-duty diesel engines into a variety of applications in the construction, commercial, industrial, agricultural, and material-handling markets.

The 1.9 Liter and 2.5 Liter engines, which meet Tier 4 Final and Stage IIIB emissions standards, are turbo-charged with four values per cylinder, and use a high pressure common-rail direct injection system, cooled exhaust gas recirculation and diesel oxygenated catalyst to provide optimum performance and fuel efficiency.

“Kohler is proud to be appointed as JCB’s engine supply partner,” said Tom Cromwell, president of Kohler Engines. “As a result of Kohler’s significant investment in diesel innovation and technology, our compact KDI engines meet stringent EU Stage IIIB and EPA Tier 4 Final emission regulations without the use of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) while delivering significant fuel savings for JCB customers.”

Lombardini’s Reggio Emilia plant is producing four engine models for JCB for numerous construction applications. JCB unveiled its telescopic forklift (JCB 35D 4x4 Teletruk) with the KDI engine at the RWM waste management show in Birmingham this week.

“This partnership makes us proud of our engineering associates who contributed to this important achievement,” said Giuseppe Bava, managing director at Lombardini. “The KDI engine meets new emission levels without a DPF and benefits manufacturers, which will be able to use a more compact engine, and the end consumer, who will benefit from a reduction in fuel consumption and operating costs. The high-performance specifications for both torque and power density also makes the KDI the new reference for higher displacement engines."
